Beat the heat: places to cool off around Laveen

When the Arizona summer hits full blast, finding ways to stay cool in Laveen becomes top priority. While

we might not have a beach around the corner, there are still plenty of ways to chill out without leaving the neighborhood – and support some great local spots while you’re at it.

Here are a few easy, affordable ways to cool off around town.

So, what are the best places to cool down?

Cesar Chavez Park and lake

A local favorite, Cesar Chavez Park offers shade, grass, and a breezy lakefront perfect for early morning or evening walks. You can even fish or just sit by the water with a cold drink and take in the view. It’s not fancy, but it’s peaceful – and that breeze off the lake hits just right on a hot day.

Ice cream and cold treats

Sometimes cooling off just means grabbing something sweet. Local legend Scooptacular is celebrating its 15th year and is a must-visit. They make their ice cream using milk from nearby Danzeisen Dairy, one of the few local dairies still in operation. Beyond the amazing scoops, Scooptacular is deeply involved in the community – they’ve sponsored free kids’ cones and supported local events for years.

Speaking of Danzeisen, their creamery store is also nearby, selling fresh milk, butter, and other dairy goodies straight from the farm.

Another option is Laveen Water & Ice (6170 51st Ave), which carries Thrifty ice cream, a nostalgic favorite. While their hours can be inconsistent, when they’re open, it’s a fun and affordable stop.

And if you’re venturing just slightly east into South Phoenix, check out Red Velvet Bakery on Central Ave – known for their amazing cupcakes and indulgent milkshakes. The family lives in Laveen, and their shop is a hidden gem for cool, creamy treats.

Cool down at the library

The Cesar Chavez Library is more than just a spot for book lovers—it’s an air-conditioned haven. If you need a break from the heat, head there to read, use the computers, or bring the kids to explore the children’s area. It’s calm, free, and one of the best-kept secrets for staying cool in the summer.

Pools, splash pads, and indoor swim spots

Laveen may not have its own public pool just yet, but there are plenty of great options close by.

  • The Kroc Center (1375 E Broadway Rd): Features an indoor pool and a splash play area for kids.
  • El Prado Pool (6428 S 19th Ave): Outdoor public pool at El Prado Park.
  • Roosevelt Pool (6246 S 7th St): Another nearby public pool in South Phoenix.
  • LA Fitness (51st Ave & Baseline): Has an indoor pool, though you’ll need a membership. They occasionally offer week-long guest passes.

And let’s not forget the splash pads! These community favourites are a lifesaver during hot months. Splash pads in Laveen open Sunday, May 25 and stay open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through October 1. They’re perfect for kids to burn off energy, and parents to catch a breath in the shade.

Stay cool at home (and shop local)

Sometimes the best way to beat the heat is by staying inside with the A/C on. But if you’re looking to upgrade your home setup, try shopping local for things like misters, fans, or blackout curtains. Supporting local hardware and home goods shops keeps money in the community – and keeps you cooler, too.

Stay cool this summer!

Summer in Laveen can be intense, but there are plenty of ways to beat the heat without going far. Whether it’s enjoying a lakeside breeze, grabbing an ice cream from a locally-owned shop, or letting the kids loose at the splash pad, there are lots of ways to stay cool while staying connected to the community.

Keep hydrated, take breaks when you need to, and don’t forget to celebrate the small joys of summer-like a good milkshake or a great splash.
