Spaces of Opportunity is a collaborative project designed to give residents of south Phoenix access to nutritious food, entrepreneurial opportunities and community building. Learn more about how we got our start.
The vision started with 19 acres of vacant land in the middle of a South Phoenix neighborhood. A group of like-minded agenices wanted to honor Arizona’s agriculture history while bringing healthy food to areas where residents struggled to find healthy options.
In 2015, represetnatives from these organizations: Desert Botanical Garden, Tiger Mountain Foundation, Unlimited Potential, Orchard Community Learning Center and Roosevelt School District got together to take the first steps in transforming the land. They came together to nurture their shared goal—to build on the cultural and agricultural roots of a south Phoenix lot and enrich the lives of those in the community.
The vacant lot was transformed into fertile land that could sustain organic agriculture. Incubator farms, community gardens, and a farmers market grew out of the space. More spaces were addded to the urban farming effort throughout the South Phoenix area.
This nonprofit organization continues to transform spaces and lives through its efforts.
