Girl Scouts
There are many active troops in the Laveen area, meeting on a variety of nights and covering multiple age groups, allowing interested families the opportunity to find a Troop that best fits their needs.
Girls can join starting in kindergarten as Daisies, where they stay until the finish first grade. Approximately every two years, the girls advance to the next level with Brownies (second and third grades), Juniors (fourth and fifth grades), Cadettes, (sixth, seventh and eighth grades), Seniors and Ambassadors cover the high school years.
With a motto, “Do a good turn daily” Flood said Girl Scouts focus on a community service, leadership skills and building self confidence and being responsible for what they say and do. Girl Scouts helps girls learn independence, responsibility, and self-reliance through earning badges, social interaction and real world experiences. Girls learn respect for themselves and others and how to use resources wisely, among others things as stated in the Girl Scout Law. Over the last few years Girls Scouts has added and built up opportunities to learn and experience STEM opportunities – coding, robotics, weather forecasting etc. In fact, the girls scout camp on Dobbins, Bob and Renee Parsons Leadership Center, is the focal point of many STEM and leadership activities.
Also Girls Scouts has been able to allow even more opportunities for outdoor experiences. There are four Girl Scout Camps and numerous badges that offer horse backing riding and care, wilderness survival and first aid, backpacking, canoeing, archery, tent camping and outdoor cooking.
There are also numerous opportunity for the Girls to learn about themselves and their country with an importance on mental, emotional and physically health tied in to all of the programs.
The organization and the programs are dependent on adult volunteers and can not function without it! Girl Scouts requires and provides all the training necessary to be engaged and involved. An adults role is helping to guide the girls through the established badge, leadership, STEM,Outdoor etc programs that are offered as well as support the Arizona Cactus Pine Council with administrative, training and functional support. Even those without kids, can help out organization in many ways. The more adults who trained and involved the more opportunities and experiences can be made available.
Annual membership in Girl Scouts of America is $25, while each troop sets its own dues. Scouting programs run concurrent with the school year, however the official Girl Scout year is Oct. through September. You can either join a troop or girls can also be a IGM – Independent Girl Member.
